Germany's Romantic Road: The Top Sights of Germany's Most Popular Bike Route

Passing through medieval towns including Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbhül, Nördlingen, and Füssen, the Romantic Road (Romantische Straße) in western Bavaria is a route that is ideal for travel by bike. Along the way, riders can view castles and wall-medieval towns, wild rivers, medieval alleyways and old world, rustic charm. It is a little wonder that so many people travel this route to experience a Bavaria that has a story book quality to it. In this post, we will look at the route and some of the interesting sights and features that give it a unique, folksy aura.

About the Road

The Romantic Road starts in Würzburg - designated as one of many German sites on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list - and ends in the Bavarian town of Füssen. The road was once a major trade route during the Middle Ages but it was rebranded in the 1950s by travel agents due to its natural charm and the many features that surround it such as romantic courtyard restaurants, lush parks and historical castles. These features make it ideal for tourists who travel there to connect with a simpler time and place. Traveling the route by car is one thing, but one can only truly appreciate its beautiful vineyards, rolling hills and the Bavarian Alps while traveling by bike.

Highlights of the Romantic Road in Germany

  • Würzburg: The Romantic Road in Germany starts here (north to south). Here lies one of the most culturally important buildings in Europe - the Residence Palace which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Würzburg is also famous for its gourmet restaurants, gorgeous vineyards and its colorful festivals.
  • Rothenburg ob der Tauber: This medieval town holds a spectacular view of the entire region.
  • Augsburg: This town was once a Mecca for wealthy traders in the region. Moreover, Augsburg is one of the oldest cities in Germany. It is dotted with baroque townhouses, splendid boulevards, and traditional restaurants all of which can be taken in at your own pace as you and friends travel the region on one of our bike tour vacations.
  • Pfaffenwinkel: This part of Bavaria is famous for its ancient churches as well as its unspoiled landscape. Many tourists make the trek here to view Wieskirche (Church of the Meadow) in Steingaden.

Finally, the best way to enjoy the Romantic Road is by bike. This way you can set your own pace, experience the beauty and old world charm of the region and meet some of the residents of the area. Our tours give cyclists the perfect opportunity to do all these things while traveling with other tourists who share their love of biking. We also have Erie Canal vacations for people who wish to explore nature on this continent.
