First off, cycling is a high-quality, aerobic exercise that is great for your cardiovascular health. However, cycling is not without its injuries. For this reason, before you start back out on the trail you should take into account injuries that are common among cyclists so that you can prepare for and know how to treat them. Below are the five most common cycling injuries and what to do to avoid/treat them Knee pain - Knee pain often comes about a result of overuse, from incorrect positioning or from riding a bike that is incorrectly set up to suit your frame. Thus, you can avoid some knee injuries by making sure that the bike you are riding is set up correctly for your height, etc. This will encourage proper positioning as you peddle. Head injuries – We cannot overstress the importance of wearing a helmet when you are cycling. Helmets prevent injuries to the head and in some areas are mandatory. Just be sure to choose a helmet that is sturdy and that fits your head. You do not want to have to adjust your headgear every few minutes. Foot numbness - The biggest cause of foot numbness when cycling is improperly fitted shoes. Another cause is too much hill riding. Hill riding causes pressure to be exerted around the ball of the foot. Be sure that your shoes are not too tight before you head out and that you limit your hill riding if numb feet have been a problem for you in the past. Lower back pain - This kind of injury is also caused by overuse. To help prevent back injuries, consider performing strengthening exercises to fortify your core. Also, stop and rest at the onset of any back pain. Finally, recurring pain to the back should be attended to by a medical professional. Achilles tendonitis - Achilles tendonitis is another overuse injury. It can lead to inflammation in the affected area. To avoid it, make sure that you rest for a few days when you begin to feel its onset. Also, use ice to reduce any swelling. As you can see, the sport that we love does not have to hurt. Take the right precautions and learn the correct treatment for these common injuries and you can be well on the road to reaping only the benefits of cycling.
