Tips for Buying a Used Bike

If you're not a mechanic, then shopping for a used bike can be somewhat daunting. This is because among many clunkers, there are some standout, used bikes that have been well maintained and are obtainable for a fair price. However, there are available mainly for cyclists who have done their homework first.

  • Identify what it is you are looking for in a bike: The first thing to decide is what kind of bike you will be purchasing. For long distance travel, you will naturally want to purchase a touring bike, mountain bike or a hybrid. After you have decided this you will need to know how much you have to spend on your purchase. If possible, go for the newest bike you can afford within your budget.
  • Know where to look: There are many places where you can buy a used bike such as general interest sites, Facebook's Market place, Craigslist, your local newspaper, etc. We recommend using a dedicated service such as Bikemart, etc. By using sites like this you will be dealing with people who have submitted some contact information to the site. You will also be more likely to purchase your bike from sellers who have a reputation based on previous sales.
  • Meet with the seller face to face: Buying a bike online doesn't always afford the buyer the opportunity to meet the seller in person and view the bike up close. However, you should do so whenever possible.
  • Check the bike for wear and tear: Assuming you can meet the person face to face; go over the bike thoroughly before buying it. Things to check include the frame and fork, the wheel and tires, the drive train and the brakes. Also, go over the bike for rust, warping, or other damage. If you do find some minor damage you may desire to purchase the bike anyway and pay for the cost of repair yourself.
  • Making a deal: don't be afraid to haggle especially if the bike is not all it was cracked up to be. Often sellers list the items they are trying to sell at a higher price than they expected to get anyway. So, this is your opportunity to really save.

Finally, when you have chosen and paid for a used bike, be sure to take it to your local bike shop for a thorough going over. Inspecting the bike for a few moments or even riding it for a few minutes is one thing; getting the thumbs up from a mechanic or mechanically inclined friend is another. Also, once you have chosen a used bike, come join us on one of our bike tour vacations. Your friends, family or colleagues will experience some of the best that nature has to offer with one of the best biking vacations on the internet.
