2020 Lake Constance - The Bodensee

Lake Constance, truly a classic bicycling region bordering this famed lake, will take you through Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

With its stunning turquoise shore shared by all three countries, Lake Constance is a jewel in the crown of central Europe. It is a perfect location for a bicycle tour with comfortable inns, hotels and excellent cuisine.

Our route follows almost 150 miles of well marked bicycle paths. You'll marvel at the attractive surrounding countryside and neatly groomed villages. Lakeside paths meander from country to country taking in flower-strewn meadows, Bavarian vineyards, and picturesque marinas.

Brimming with a rich layered history, each day includes stops at cultural highlights and fairy tale castles. We've designed our route so that you'll have ample time to explore the flower decked palaces in Konstanz and numerous village squares. This is EASY cycling with most rides along pleasant bicycle paths. We invite you to join us on what will surely be a memorable vacation.

Daily Itinerary

(Includes all breakfasts, 4 dinners)

Day 1. (Sunday: Switzerland/Germany)

Meet in the lakeside town of Kreuzlingen, Switzerland, a one-hour direct train ride from the Zurich airport. Bike fitting, welcome drink, & a short walk to the medieval town of Constance for dinner.

Day 2. (Monday: Switzerland/Germany)

Cycle from Constance to Stein am Rhein, noted for its famous well-preserved Old Town, featuring painted facades and half-timbered 16th century houses. After lunch a short ride to hotel on the Rhine. Lodge in Gaienhofen, Germany. (20 or 26 miles)

Day 3. (Tuesday: Germany)

Cycle from Stein am Rhein through the old imperial town of Radolfzell to lunch in Ludwigshafen. Cycle along lakeshore to spa town of Überlingen with its Gothic cathedral and lakeside promenade. On to charming medieval town of Meersburg, where we check in to our 4-star hotel for two nights. (19 or 33 miles)

Day 4. (Wednesday: Germany)

Guests will have plenty of time to enjoy the pedestrian zone with its shops and cafés; take a tour of one or both castles, or take the ferry across from the hotel to the "Flower Island" of Mainau. First evidence of human settlement on Mainau dates back to 3000 BC. Mainau is a wonderland of botanical gardens, fountains, and home to great restaurants. Optional cycling along the lake available.

Day 5. (Thursday: Germany)

Follow lakeshore to Friedrichshafen, home of the famous Zeppelin Musuem. After lunch, continue to the Bavarian island town of Lindau. Enjoy the pedestrian zone or relax at a waterfront café or wine bar watching the sunset over the lake. (12 or 26 miles)

Day 6. (Friday: Germany, Austria, Switzerland)

Take in magnificent views of snow-capped alpine peaks as we cycle along Lake Constance's eastern shore through well-kept villages to Constance. Last opportunity for shopping or relaxing at a lakeside café before our final dinner. (27 or 48 miles)

Day 7. (Saturday)

Depart from Constance.
