Through Alpine Meadows to the city of Mozart and the Sound of Music: Salzburg - spectacular alpine routes & surprisingly EASY riding!

Experience hidden waterfalls, pristine mountain lakes, exquisite alpine lodging, and warm Austrian hospitality. Our route captures the essence of Austria by bike: a gentle journey along bike paths and country roads to the World Heritage City of Salzburg.

Our Austria program includes ground transportation from and to Munich. Our routes feature EASY CYCLING through two river valleys with no major climbs. You'll actually lose 1,500 vertical feet by the time we reach Salzburg! Reasonable daily distances of 25 - 45 miles allow you to truly appreciate this magical region. Over 85% of the route follows along traffic-free bike paths.

Lodging in authentic Austrian chalets is surely a highlight! We'll experience just three different hotels over seven nights. (You won't have to pack and unpack each day.) Hotels include the four-star Krimmlerfaelle, Alpin Sport and the luxurious Gruenauerhof.

Daily Itinerary

(Includes all breakfasts, 5 dinners, Rosenheim Rail station back to Munich transfers)

Day 1

Lunchtime transfer from Rosenheim to historic village of Krimml. Bike fitting, followed by orientation meeting and welcome dinner.

Day 2

Easy cycling along the Salzach River to the medieval market square of Mittersill. Lunch at one of the best restaurants or at an outdoor cafe by the square. On the way we view Austria's highest mountain, the Grossvenediger. We continue to the famous resort town of Zell Am See, located on one of the most beautiful lakes in Europe, where we check into our 4-star Inn for 3 nights. (23 or 42 miles)

Day 3

Loop ride to the storybook village of Maria Alm. Explore the 15th century Romanesque church or relax at a cafe with homemade apple strudel. Return to Zell am See. (10 or 20 miles, optional golfing, walking or hiking today)

Day 4

A short transfer from Zell. See to Saalfelden for the start of the best riding of the tour! Cycle in peaceful valleys surrounded by Lofer and Leogang mountains. Lunch in the 12th century village of Waidring next to the hotel where Mozart spent the night in 1771. (23, 46, or 57 miles)

Day 5

A gorgeous ride to the village of Lofer, which was used in the film Where Eagles Dare with Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. Then continue along the Saalach River on a romantic trail via Unken and Schneizlreuth through forested region that enters Germany at Bad Reichenhall. (16 or 40 miles)

Day 6

Cycle along the Saalach River into the heart of Salzburg to Mozartplatz where we meet our local guide for a 2-hour private walking tour of the city. He'll take us on fascinating journey through the city of Mozart and explain how salt made Salzburg one of the richest cities in Europe. Afterwards plenty of time to shop, have lunch or stroll through the market streets to explore on your own. (9 or 18 miles)

Day 7

Once again we'll follow a flat bike path along the Saalach River back into the heart of Salzburg. Today our local guide will take us on a 4-hour cycling tour of the city including highlights and locations from the Sound of Music, both from the film and the real story of the Von Trapps. We'll stop off at the Trapp Family residence, Frohnburg Palace and the beautiful Hellbrunn Gardens. (9 or 18 or 26 miles)
